Using the PayPal Sandbox Card Test Tool: A Comprehensive Guide
Onyx Gift Cards is a Grenadian company designed to introduce, market and manage gift cards systems in Grenada for retailers and corporations. We are enthusiastic about the effect and influence we will have on the local market. We intend to expand our systems regionally with a range of product offerings and services.
Gift cards are the preferred way of giving and receiving gifts. They carry a monetary value that can be redeemed for gifts at your favorite store.
Onyx GiftCards are “Open Gift Cards” which means that they can be redeemed at multiple merchant locations. They are standard credit card size, can fit into the average wallet and made of PVC plastic. Onyx GiftCards are Barcoded for security and safety for the consumer and bear a disclaimer at the back.
Onyx Giftcards can be bought with a branded Card backer which is black in colour and is designed to fit the card. There is an area to write a brief message to the recipient as well.
PayPal tests cards in the sandbox with test card numbers that PayPal publishes in its developer documentation. No money moves. No bank sees the charge. You create a sandbox business account, take the REST API client ID and secret, then send a card payment through the Orders API or a hosted checkout page.
A sandbox account is a copy of a PayPal account with fake balances. Cards added to the sandbox are not routed to card networks. The sandbox returns the same response fields as production, including order status, capture status, and error codes.
PayPal lists test numbers for Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover in the developer documentation. Each number maps to one result. Some approve. Some return a decline. The list also covers 3D Secure outcomes and card-not-present checks. Use the numbers as printed. The sandbox validates the fields, so a test number paired with a real billing address returns unexpected errors.
PayPal ships a 3D Secure simulator in the sandbox. The challenge page lets you pick pass or fail. That choice drives the final order status, so test both paths.
Sandbox webhooks fire with the same event names as production. Register a URL in the app settings and confirm the events arrive for approvals, captures, and declines.
Sandbox cards cannot be used outside the sandbox. Real card numbers sent to a sandbox endpoint do not settle and may be rejected. Do not use the sandbox to check a card you do not own. The mapping of test numbers to outcomes changes between API versions, so read the current table before you write assertions.
The term card testing also names an attack. Someone submits many card numbers to a live payment page to find valid accounts. That activity is fraud. Processors answer it with rate limits, CAPTCHA, and blocking. A sandbox test is separate. It runs in a closed environment with published numbers and no cardholder data.
