What is a Gift Card?

Gift cards are the preferred way of giving and receiving gifts. They carry a monetary value that can be redeemed for gifts at your favorite store.
Onyx GiftCards are “Open Gift Cards” which means that they can be redeemed at multiple merchant locations. They are standard credit card size, can fit into the average wallet and made of PVC plastic. Onyx GiftCards are Barcoded for security and safety for the consumer and bear a disclaimer at the back.
Onyx Giftcards can be bought with a branded Card backer which is black in colour and is designed to fit the card. There is an area to write a brief message to the recipient as well.

The short answer

A CVV test input example is a placeholder card verification value used only inside a payment gateway sandbox or test mode. It is never tied to a real account, never resolves to a real cardholder, and never settles funds. Gateways publish test card numbers, and the CVV field on those test cards normally accepts any value that matches the expected length, most often "123" for a 3-digit card or "1234" for American Express. If you are integrating a checkout, you test with those published numbers. If you are looking for a live CVV to punch into a real storefront, that is card fraud, and no article can make it legal or safe.

What the CVV field actually validates

The card verification value is a short numeric code that issuers print or embed alongside the account number. Visa, Mastercard, and Discover use three digits on the back signature panel. American Express uses four digits on the front. The field exists to prove the person entering the number is holding the physical card or has access to the card data, which is why merchants are told never to store it after authorization.

For a developer, the field is mostly a format and error-handling problem. You are testing whether your form accepts the right length, rejects letters and spaces, and surfaces the correct decline reason when the issuer says no.

Format rules you can verify without a real card

Those four rules cover the great majority of CVV-related bugs in a checkout flow, and you can test all of them with sandbox cards.

Sandbox test values and where they come from

Every major processor publishes a set of test card numbers for its sandbox. Stripe, Adyen, Braintree, Square, and Authorize.Net all maintain public documentation listing card numbers that trigger approvals, declines, and specific error codes. The CVV on those cards is usually any correctly formatted value, which means "123" works for a Visa test card and "1234" works for an Amex test card.

Processors also offer special CVV behaviors in test mode. A specific test CVV can be configured to force a CVV mismatch decline, which lets you confirm your error copy and retry logic without touching a live account.

Cons

Cons

Test scenarios worth covering

  1. Valid 3-digit CVV on a Visa sandbox card: expect approval.
  2. Valid 4-digit CVV on an Amex sandbox card: expect approval.
  3. Two-digit value: expect a client-side validation error before submit.
  4. Alphabetic input: expect rejection with the field left blank or unchanged.
  5. Forced CVV mismatch: expect the gateway decline code and your mapped message.
  6. Empty field on a card-not-present transaction: expect a decline where the issuer requires the code.
  7. Retry after a mismatch: expect no duplicate charge and no logged CVV value.

Why buying CVVs is a crime, not a shortcut

Card verification values are issued to cardholders, not sold. Markets that advertise CVV data are trading stolen payment credentials. Using one to complete a purchase is unauthorized use of a payment card, and the FTC and federal prosecutors treat the buying, selling, and possession of that data as serious offenses. The operational risks stack up as well: card networks and issuers flag the merchant account, processors freeze the funds, and the loss lands on whoever accepted the transaction. There is no version of this that ends with a working, durable checkout.

Recommendation by use case

If you build or QA a checkout, use the published test cards from your processor, hard code "123" and "1234" in your fixtures, and assert on the decline codes. If you are auditing a form, test the format rules above and confirm the field is excluded from logs and storage. If you arrived here hoping to find a real CVV to enter, the honest answer is that this is fraud, the downside is criminal liability, and the legitimate path is a card you are authorized to use.
