CVV Test Environment Systems: How Sandbox Card Verification Actually Works
Redeem your gift cards at any of our Merchants
Onyx Gift Cards is a Grenadian company designed to introduce, market and manage gift cards systems in Grenada for retailers and corporations. We are enthusiastic about the effect and influence we will have on the local market. We intend to expand our systems regionally with a range of product offerings and services.
Gift cards are the preferred way of giving and receiving gifts. They carry a monetary value that can be redeemed for gifts at your favorite store.
Onyx GiftCards are “Open Gift Cards” which means that they can be redeemed at multiple merchant locations. They are standard credit card size, can fit into the average wallet and made of PVC plastic. Onyx GiftCards are Barcoded for security and safety for the consumer and bear a disclaimer at the back.
Onyx Giftcards can be bought with a branded Card backer which is black in colour and is designed to fit the card. There is an area to write a brief message to the recipient as well.
In a test environment, a CVV is a fake number typed into a sandbox form. The gateway checks it against a rule set the vendor publishes, not against an issuer. Real card numbers, real CVVs and real money stay out of the flow. A sandbox CVV does not verify a person or a bank account. It tests code.
Payment gateways expose a test mode that mirrors production API calls. The card number decides the outcome. Vendors publish test card numbers that approve, decline, or fail a single check such as CVV or postal code. In most sandboxes any 3 digit value passes when the card number is a success card. Vendors that need a mismatch use a dedicated card number, so the CVV you type stays 123 or another 3 digit string.
The response contains a field such as cvc_check with the values pass, fail, unchecked or unavailable. Your integration reads that field and decides what to show the customer. Card data in test mode is not sent to a card network.
A sandbox does not show issuer behavior, real AVS results, network timeouts, or fraud screening rules. Test results are deterministic. Production results are not. A passing sandbox CVV check says your code handles the field. It says nothing about whether a card is valid.
PCI DSS treats the CVV as sensitive authentication data. Requirement 3.2 forbids storing it after authorization, in any system, including test. Reusing real card numbers in a sandbox breaks the same rule. Use vendor test data.
