Card testing fraud is the practice of running stolen card numbers through payment systems with small or repeated authorization attempts to learn which accounts are still active. Fraudsters then reuse or resell the numbers that pass, usually before the real cardholder notices anything. For merchants, the fallout appears as chargebacks, processor penalties, higher decline rates, and a checkout that suddenly looks busy for all the wrong reasons.

Key Features

What the technical signals look like

Payment gateways log every authorization request, so card testing leaves a trail even when the orders are later declined. Unusual spikes in authorization volume, repeated declines on the same card fingerprint, mismatched security code checks, and traffic from data-center IP ranges are the common markers. Velocity limits, CAPTCHA or bot scoring at checkout, and requiring verification for the first purchase all raise the cost of an automated attack without slowing down genuine customers.

Access, refunds, and support

This guide is delivered digitally, so there is nothing to ship and no waiting on a courier. Access is granted immediately after checkout, and if the content does not load or you need a copy for your team, support will sort it out quickly. Refund requests are honored within the standard window, and updates to the guide are included at no extra cost.

How can a merchant spot card testing fraud early?

Watch for sudden increases in declined transactions, many small orders from one network address, and repeat attempts on the same card across multiple accounts. Alerting on authorization velocity usually catches an attack within minutes rather than days.

What should a business do after an attack?

Block the offending IP ranges, add bot protection and verification at checkout, review recent orders for reversals, and notify the payment processor so the activity is documented. Tightening those controls typically stops the next wave.

Is card testing fraud illegal?

Yes. Using stolen payment credentials to test or make purchases is a crime in the United States and most other countries, and it exposes the offender to criminal charges in addition to civil liability.
