A card expiry test verifies that a checkout form or payment gateway reads an expiration date correctly and rejects dates that are malformed, impossible, or in the past. Teams run these tests in a sandbox with published test card numbers, so no real account data is involved. Passing an expiry test confirms your form handles date logic, not that any specific account is active.
An expiry test exercises the date field alone: format, range, and time-zone handling. It also checks the month rollover, because a card dated for the current month stays valid through the last day of that month. The issuing bank and the processor, not the merchant, make the final call on whether an account is live.
Most processors expect two separate fields, MM and YY, or a single MM/YY string. Some regions use MM/YYYY, and a few legacy systems still accept MM-YY with a hyphen. Whatever the display format, the value sent to the gateway should match that gateway's documentation.
Stripe, PayPal, and Adyen each publish sandbox card numbers that trigger approvals, declines, and specific error codes. Pair a short-dated sandbox card with a stale date to confirm your form blocks it, then switch to a future date to confirm approval. Never substitute live account data in a test environment.
PCI DSS classifies the expiration date as cardholder data, so it must be protected in storage and in transit. Collecting, buying, or sharing expiration dates tied to accounts you do not own is card fraud under U.S. law. A compliant test plan keeps production data out of test systems entirely.
No. The Luhn algorithm validates the primary account number only. Expiration validation is a separate format and range check, and neither one proves that an account is open.
